Experience the beauty of Iowa Blooms as you wander through thousands of colorful blooms and create your own custom bouquet. For the remainder of the season, our U-Pick experience is available by appointment, giving you a more personal and relaxed flower-farm experience.
- Most guests spend about an hour with us, but there is no rush. Take time to wander, enjoy the flowers, and make your visit your own
- $25 per flower picker (Guests who want to stroll, relax, or enjoy the farm with you are welcome.)

OUR Story
Hi! We’re Heidi and Darren Sleister, the hands and hearts behind Iowa Blooms Flower Farm in Ankeny, Iowa.
We’re also the proud parents of two grown sons and recent empty nesters. Some couples celebrate this stage of life by traveling the world or taking up relaxing hobbies. We looked at each other and said… let’s build a flower farm! So here we are- planting thousands of flowers and loving every minute of it.
Flowers have been part of Heidi’s life from a young age. She grew up on an acreage in Ankeny, where her dad kept a large vegetable garden and her mom grew flowers. Some of her best memories are helping plant, tend, and harvest alongside them. This early love of nature and plants has grown over time.
Darren grew up on a farm in western Iowa and comes from a long line of Iowa farmers. He brings the practical know-how and the muscle behind many of the projects on our farm- building, fixing, hauling, and improving the farm as we go. He’s also an entrepreneur and loves the challenge of growing something meaningful from the ground up.
Our backgrounds shape our farm in unique ways. Heidi’s work as a biology professor and master gardener is reflected in how thoughtfully and carefully we grow, plan, and care for our plants. Darren’s entrepreneurial spirit helps turn big ideas into real projects. Together, it’s a blend of science, practicality, and a lot of learning as we go.
Today, Iowa Blooms is located on three acres of beautiful, fertile soil right in the heart of Ankeny. We love being outside and working with nature. Beyond thousands of annual and perennial plants, our field is full of life- bees, butterflies, birds, dragonflies, toads, hummingbirds, bunnies, and even the occasional neighborhood cat. This diversity of life is a result of using sustainable, pollinator-friendly practices and avoiding pesticides whenever possible.
For us, Iowa Blooms isn’t just a business. It’s a way to physically work hard, enjoy nature, and bring a little more beauty and joy into everyday life. We grow flowers to share beauty and joy with our community and look forward to seeing you at the Ankeny Farmer’s Market and at our farm. Thank you for supporting local and being part of our story!
